Best help desk and shared inbox for Canadian small businesses

None of the four public cards print CAD. Zendesk’s official currency list is USD, EUR, GBP, and BRL. Freshdesk, Help Scout, and Gorgias are USD-style stickers. Gorgias is Shopify ticket volume, not a clinic inbox.

Last updated 6 September 2026. About 16 minutes. Research from public vendor docs and CRA pages — not a hands-on lab test.

A Smithville shop whose “support team” is three people and a shared Gmail label does not need a bank’s CX RFP. It needs one inbox, assignment, and an honest sticker — in CAD if the vendor prints it. US “best help desk 2026” lists sell you Zendesk Suite as if it billed loonies.

This comparison is four public stories: Zendesk (USD / EUR / GBP / BRL — not CAD), Freshdesk (USD-style agent seats), Help Scout (USD-style shared inbox, with a printed Free plan), and Gorgias (Shopify ticket volume, not a clinic inbox). Help-desk and shared-inbox prices checked against public vendor pages, 6 September 2026.

Who this page is for

  • A Canadian SMB that outgrew a shared Gmail and needs assignment, saved replies, and a knowledge base.
  • An owner quoted “Zendesk Suite” who needs the official currency list — USD, EUR, GBP, BRL — not a blog’s CAD conversion.
  • A Shopify shop whose tickets are order-status and returns — Gorgias is in this set for that job only.
  • Not a 200-agent contact-centre RFP. Not a newsletter tool. Not a CRM. Not legal advice on CASL or PIPEDA.

Snapshot (public pages, 6 September 2026)

None of the four public cards print CAD. Zendesk’s official currency list excludes CAD. Freshdesk’s official FAQ names USD for offline payments. Help Scout and Gorgias are unlabelled dollars; Gorgias’s official plan blog labelled USD. Ticket vs seat lines are from official pages, not a lab.

Zendesk — official currencies are not CAD

Official zendesk.com/pricing (6 September 2026): Support Team $19/agent/month paid yearly — email and ticketing, routing, prebuilt analytics, pre-written responses, automations. Suite Team $55/agent/month paid yearly — Support Team plus AI Agents, knowledge base, Action Builder, omnichannel routing, messaging and live chat, telephony. The pricing page shows a Monthly/Annual toggle and 20% off annual. AI add-ons and Copilot sit above the sticker. zendesk.com/pricing prints unlabelled $ on Support and Suite cards. Support Team is the email-and-ticket floor. Suite Team is the omnichannel sticker most “Zendesk for small business” blogs quote — still USD on Zendesk’s own currency list. If a salesperson shows you Suite Enterprise + Copilot, that card is Talk to Sales. The pipeline those tickets belong to is still CRM.

Freshdesk — USD-style seats, Growth is $19

Official freshworks.com/freshdesk/pricing/ (6 September 2026): Growth $19/agent/month billed annually — ticketing and shared inbox, customer portal and knowledge base, out-of-the-box analytics, Threads and tasks, roles; Freddy AI Agent first 500 sessions included. Enterprise $89/agent/month billed annually — Freddy AI Insights, skill-based routing, sandbox, audit logs, allowed domains and IP whitelisting. Additional AI Agent sessions $49/100 sessions. Day passes $2 / $7 / $12 per agent per day by plan. Connector app tasks $80 per 5,000 tasks. Official FAQ: 14-day trial is Enterprise; then pick a plan and pay by card. Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Amex. No PayPal. No cancellation fee. freshworks.com/freshdesk/pricing/ prints $19 / $55 / $89 per agent/month billed annually with no CAD prefix. Official FAQ on the same page: all offline payments follow USD pricing. Treat the list as USD. Confirm currency and tax at checkout. Do not invent a CAD Freshdesk SKU. The page schema still says “starts at $15” — the printed cards are $19 / $55 / $89. Source: https://www.freshworks.com/freshdesk/pricing/.

Growth is the shared-inbox floor on the printed cards. Pro adds multilingual helpdesk and multiple SLAs. Do not paste a third-party “Freshdesk Omni $29” as this page’s list — this research used the Freshdesk pricing URL, not a different Freshworks SKU. Tax on the Freshworks invoice is still tax on software, not GST/HST you charge a client.

Free accounts need no payment method. helpscout.com/pricing prints $25 / $45 / $75 per user/mo with a Monthly/Annual toggle and −16% on Annual. The page does not print CAD. Treat as USD. Confirm currency and tax at checkout. Do not invent loonies. Source: https://www.helpscout.com/pricing/.

Help Scout is the shared inbox most service firms actually mean. Beacon and Docs sit on the same official compare table — that is a help widget on your site, not a replacement for website builders. Plus lists HubSpot as an integration; that is a sidebar, not a CRM.

Gorgias — Shopify tickets, not a clinic inbox

Official gorgias.com/pricing (6 September 2026): Official hero: Helpdesk + AI Agent on one bill. Helpdesk scales from 50 to 5,000 tickets a month and is never priced per agent. AI Agent is on every plan; you pay when it resolves. Copy: “We power customer conversations for 40% of Shopify brands.” Not a clinic or trades shared inbox. Then $0.36 per ticket and $1.50 per automated interaction past the limit. Talk to sales over 5,000 conversations/month. The feature compare table prints different AI per-interaction list fees ($1.00 / $0.90 / $0.90 / $0.85 by plan) than the plan-card overage ($1.50). This page cites the plan cards as the checkout-facing sticker and does not invent a blended rate. gorgias.com/pricing prints unlabelled $. Official Gorgias blog “How to Choose the Best Gorgias Plan” labelled those plan dollars USD. The public pricing page retrieved 6 September 2026 does not print CAD. Treat as USD. Confirm currency and tax at checkout. Sources: https://www.gorgias.com/pricing; https://www.gorgias.com/blog/gorgias-plan.

Starter is monthly-only on the official card. Basic is the first annual toggle most growing shops hit (300 tickets). Count last month’s Shopify tickets before you buy Pro at $5,652/year. The storefront those tickets come from is still website builders. The “your order shipped” campaign is still email marketing— Klaviyo is not Gorgias.

  2. You want the cheapest printed agent seat and will live in tickets: Freshdesk Growth at $19 USD/agent/month billed annually. Pro if you need multiple SLAs.
  3. You were sold omnichannel + phone and will pay USD: Zendesk Suite Team at $55/agent/month paid yearly. Support Team at $19 if you only needed email tickets. Official currencies still exclude CAD.
  4. Shopify order-status and returns: Gorgias Starter ($40/mo monthly, 50 tickets) or Basic ($77/mo annual, 300 tickets). Volume, not seats. Not for a clinic.
