Best payment processors for Canadian small businesses

Public CAD fee tables. Interac debit is not Interac e-Transfer. Helcim and Moneris publish Canadian Interac numbers; PayPal’s merchant table does not.

Last updated 6 September 2026. About 15 minutes. Research from public vendor docs and CRA pages — not a hands-on lab test.

A Canadian processor has to take Interac debit if people stand at a counter, settle in CAD, and not confuse that with Interac e-Transfer sitting in someone’s inbox. US blogs that only print 2.9% + 30¢ miss the debit column — and miss Helcim.

This comparison is five options Canadians actually open: Stripe, Square, Moneris, PayPal, and Helcim. Payment-processor prices checked against public vendor pages, 4 September 2026. Buttons are official marketing URLs, not affiliate trackers.

I have not processed a week of Smithville sales on each stack for NorthOffice. Fit is inferred from public fee tables — including Interac lines the vendor does not print.

Who each processor is actually for

  • Square — counter or appointments, published Interac, free POS software. Hardware and till workflow: POS in Canada.
  • Stripe — online checkout and invoicing you build or embed. Published CAD card and Interac debit. Not a café till out of the box.
  • Helcim — Calgary-founded interchange-plus with a public Interac debit table and no monthly account fee on the pricing page. Head-to-head with Square: Square vs Helcim for Canadian small businesses.
  • Moneris — the Canadian acquirer most banks still name. Public Flat Rate table includes Interac in person and online. Terminals and sales quotes still exist.
  • PayPal — customers who already have a PayPal balance. CAD commercial rates are published. Interac debit is not on that table.

Stripe Canada — CAD cards, published Interac debit

CAD on stripe.com/en-ca/pricing: 2.9% + CA$0.30 per successful domestic card transaction. CA$0.15 per Interac debit transaction. No setup or monthly fees on standard pay-as-you-go pricing Stripe’s published Interac product is Interac debit (Direct Payments), not Interac e-Transfer. Source: https://stripe.com/en-ca/pricing.

Stripe is the usual pick when the checkout is a website or an invoice link, not a tap terminal. Pair it with invoicing software or a ledger — Stripe is not your GST/HST return.

Square Canada — free software, published Interac at the till

Same Canadian fee table this site already cites: in-person credit 2.5%, Interac 0.75% + 7¢, online 2.8% + 30¢. Offline session up to 24 hours; Interac does not work offline Sources: https://squareup.com/ca/en/payments/our-fees, https://squareup.com/ca/en/point-of-sale/pricing.

Square Payroll is still not a Canadian product. Staff need a CRA payroll tool. Square vs Helcim (rates, Interac, hardware, CAD payouts): Square vs Helcim for Canadian small businesses. Starting path for a sole prop: how to accept credit cards in Canada.

Moneris — public Flat Rate, Interac in person and online

Flat Rate card-present: 2.65% + $0.10 per successful credit transaction. Flat Rate Interac debit in person: $0.12 per successful debit transaction. Flat Rate card-not-present: 2.85% + $0.30 per successful credit transaction. Flat Rate Interac debit card-not-present: $1.00 per successful debit transaction. Simplified (interchange-plus) pricing exists; the public page does not print a single IC+ margin for every MCC. Incidental fees listed include Moneris Go software $5.00 and a $5.00 minimum merchant discount rate. Moneris markets next-day deposits with BMO and RBC Source: https://www.moneris.com/en/pricing.

Those Flat Rate numbers are the public marketing table. A signed merchant agreement can still differ. This page does not invent an interchange-plus margin Moneris did not print.

PayPal Canada — CAD commercial rate, no Interac debit line

CAD on PayPal’s Canada merchant fees page (updated 9 February 2026): 2.90% + CAD $0.30 fixed fee for domestic commercial transactions. QR code transactions CAD $10.01+: 1.90% + fixed fee; CAD $10.00 and below: 2.40% + fixed fee The public Canada merchant fee table does not list a separate Interac debit or Interac e-Transfer rate. Do not invent one. Source: https://www.paypal.com/ca/webapps/mpp/merchant-fees.

PayPal is useful when the buyer already lives in PayPal. It is a poor substitute for tap Interac at a café. Do not paste Square’s 0.75% + 7¢ onto a PayPal invoice.

Helcim — Calgary-founded, interchange-plus, Interac cents

Helcim’s about page describes a Calgary-founded payments company. Public pricing page: no account monthly fees, no minimums, no statement fees. Interchange-plus in-person (first volume band $0–$50k): interchange + 0.40% + 8¢ (helcim.com/pricing FAQ, same table as interchange-plus). Keyed and online, same band: interchange + 0.50% + 25¢. Helcim’s pricing FAQ (6 September 2026): Interac Debit 9¢, or 12¢ for tap. An earlier retrieve of Helcim’s Canada fee-disclosure page listed Chip & PIN 9.0¢ and Flash/tap 12.5¢ with volume bands that can lower those cents — that legal page was not re-fetched on 6 September 2026. Published Interac figures are Interac debit at a reader — not Interac e-Transfer. Sources: https://www.helcim.com/pricing/, https://www.helcim.com/interchange-plus/, https://legal.helcim.com/ca/fee-disclosures/, https://www.helcim.com/about-us/.

Interchange-plus looks cheaper than 2.9% + 30¢ on a $40 tap. It looks less magic on a premium card keyed online. Helcim publishes the margin; you still need volume and card mix to know the effective rate. This page does not invent a “typical 2.1%.” Longer Helcim vs Square write-up: Square vs Helcim.

A practical pick

  1. Counter or appointments, want Interac tomorrow: Square, then read the POS guide.
  2. Website or API checkout, want a printed CAD Interac debit fee: Stripe.
  3. Want interchange-plus and a Calgary vendor with public Interac cents: Helcim.
  4. Bank-introduced terminal or a quoted merchant account: Moneris Flat Rate as the public benchmark, then ask for Simplified if volume is large.
  5. Buyers already pay you in PayPal: keep PayPal; do not pretend it is Interac tap.
